Buttermilk ice cream is really good? What???

I know this recipe sounds crazy, but my mother made it all the time when we went camping. You don’t taste the buttermilk… Really! I replaced the sugar with Swerve and made it with the Cuisinart Ice Cream maker. It was amazing! Next time, I think I’ll use a little less sweetener though.


  • 1 quart buttermilk
  • 1 pint cream (not whipped)
  • 1-1/2 cups sugar
  • Vanilla to flavor


  1. Blend ingredients and freeze in churn
  2. If no churn is available, the mixture may be frozen in the freezer.
    1. When of mushy consistency, put in bowl and beat with egg beater
    2. Refreeze
